smiling/clutching/crying

These photographs were taken by a door to traveling photographer around 1956 in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles. They are excerpts from a larger group of photos. I have always assumed that they were taken in this order - from happy to sad. I was looking at them again and realized they have could have been made in the other direction. I was crying, scared of the camera (and I assume strange man), then I gained my composure and finally smiling. Only I look at the camera. My mother concerned with me. These images were the outtakes form the session, but always my favorites. My biggest question has always been, why did the photographer take this moments?
